Точная дата строительства храма неизвестна. Первое упоминание — Сотная грамота 1621-1622 г. На тот момент храм был деревянным.

Нынешнее здание возведено в 1875 г. по проекту Константина Тона, автора храма Христа Спасителя, и освящено 22 мая 1875 г. (по старому стилю), в праздник Вознесения Господня.

В 1925 г. богослужения в храме прекратились и были возобновлены лишь в 2003 г. В 2021 г. начаты работы по восстановлению иконостаса по единственной сохранившейся фотографии интерьера.

24 декабря 2022 г. состоялось освящение новых колоколов.
